Power Steering Pump — Removal and Installation (Opel Vectra A)

Note: Use a new hydraulic hose pipe connector O-ring when installing.


1.6L models (until 1992.)



Removal



1. Remove the air cleaner housing located near the right front fender as described in Sections 4A or 4B.

2. Remove the alternator/power steering pump drive belt as described in Section 1.

3. Loosen the three mounting bolts and remove the power steering pump pulley.

4. Unfasten and remove the outer timing belt cover.

5. Disconnect the hydraulic line tube coupling and hose from the pump. Be prepared for fluid to escape and plug any open holes in the pump and pipes to prevent dirt from entering and further fluid loss.

6. Unscrew the two pump mounting bolts and remove the pump from the cylinder block (towards the generator) (see illustration).

7. It is not possible to overhaul the pump; if the pump is out of order, replace it.

Installation



8. Perform installation in reverse order. Replace the O-ring when installing the hydraulic line tube coupling and tighten the power steering pump alternator drive belt (Section 1).



9. Finally, top up the fluid level and bleed the hydraulic line as described in Section 1.

Models 1.6 (since 1993), 1.8 and 2.0 l



Removal



10. Remove the power steering pump drive belt as described in Section 1.

11. Disconnect the hydraulic line pipe coupling and flexible hose from the pump (see illustration). Be prepared for fluid to escape and plug any openings in the pump, pipe and hose to prevent dirt from entering and further fluid loss.

12. Loosen and remove the four mounting bolts. Remove the nuts, being careful not to lose the rubber washers installed in the mounting bracket.

13. Remove the pump from the vehicle.

14. It is not possible to overhaul the pump, and if the pump is faulty, replace it.

Installation



15. Install in the reverse order. Replace the O-ring when connecting the hydraulic line pipe coupling to the pump. Tighten the drive belt as described in Section 1. Note that the pump mounting bolts have different tightening torques (see illustrations).

16 Finally, bring the fluid level up to normal and bleed the hydraulic line (Section 1).
