Note: New guard retaining brackets will be required for installation.
1. Remove the steering gear as described in Chapter 37 or Chapter 39, depending on the model.
2. Remove the mounting clip and rubber component from the left end of the steering gear.
3. On a power steering gear, disconnect the hydraulic line hose couplings from the left end of the steering gear.
4. Remove the outer guard retaining clips from each end of the steering gear, then remove the guard/tube assembly.
5. Remove the inner retaining clips of the protective casing and separate the protective casing from the pipe.
6. Install the new protective cover onto the pipe using new brackets. The brackets should be positioned so that after the steering gear is installed on the vehicle, the ends of the brackets point upwards.
7. Install the guard/pipe assembly onto the steering gear and secure it with new clamps, with the ends also facing upwards. Make sure the guard is not twisted.
8. On the power steering gear, connect the hydraulic line hose couplings using new O-rings.
9. Install the mounting clamp and rubber component, then install the steering gear (Chapter 37).
