Note: New guard retaining brackets will be required for installation.
1. Remove the steering gear as described in Chapter 37 or Chapter 39, depending on the model.
2. Remove the mounting clip and rubber component from the left end of the steering gear.
3. On the power steering gear, disconnect the hydraulic line tube couplings from the left end of the steering gear.
4. Remove the outer guard retaining brackets from each end of the steering gear, then remove the guard/tube assembly.
5. Remove the inner retaining clips of the guard and separate the guard from the pipe.
6. Install the new guard on the pipe using the new brackets. The brackets must be placed so that the ends of the brackets point upwards after the steering gear is installed on the vehicle.
7. Install the guard/pipe assembly to the steering box and secure it with new brackets, the ends of which should also be pointing up. Make sure the protective cover is not twisted.
8. On the power steering gear, connect the hydraulic line tube couplings using new O-rings.
9. Install the mounting clip and rubber component, then install the steering gear (Chapter 37).
