Steering wheel — removal and installation (Opel Vectra A)

Note: This step requires a two-legged puller.


Warning: If your model is equipped with an air bag, read the warning in Section 12 before you start working.


Removal



1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position and do not move them until you have installed the steering wheel.

3. Using a screwdriver as a lever, remove the horn button from the center of the steering wheel and disconnect its wiring.

4. Using a screwdriver, press the tabs of the lock washer securing the steering wheel nut.

5. Loosen and remove the steering wheel nut and lock washer.

6. Place alignment marks on the steering wheel and the end of the steering column shaft.

7. Install a small two-legged puller on the steering wheel to remove it from the steering column shaft (see illustration). Note that the steering wheel is very tightly fitted to the shaft.

Installation



8. Using a soft tap on the metal tube or socket, install the steering wheel onto the steering column shaft. Be sure to align the marks made during removal. Check the wheel alignment as described in Chapter 31, then drive it into place until it stops.



9. Install the lock washer on the steering wheel mounting nut and tighten the nut to the specified tightening torque Specifications. Bend the tabs of the washer to secure the nut.

10. Install the horn key by securely connecting the wiring. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
