Note: This action will require a two-legged puller.
Warning: If your model is equipped with an air bag, read the warning in Section 12 before you start working.
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Set the front wheels in a straight ahead position and do not move them until you install the steering wheel.
3. Remove, using a screwdriver as a lever, the horn button from the center of the steering wheel and disconnect its electrical wiring.
4. Using a screwdriver, pry out the tabs on the lock washer securing the steering wheel nut.
5. Loosen and remove the steering wheel nut and lock washer.
6. Put alignment marks on a steering wheel and the end of a shaft of a steering column.
7. Install a small two-legged puller on the steering wheel to remove it from the steering column shaft (see illustration). Please note that the steering wheel is very tight on the shaft.
Installation
8. While gently tapping the metal tube or socket, install the steering wheel onto the steering column shaft. Don't forget to align the marks you made during removal. Check wheel alignment as described in Chapter 31, then push it into place until it stops.
9. Install the lock washer on the steering wheel mounting nut and tighten the nut with a tightening torque specified specifications. Bend the tabs of the washer to secure the nut.
10. Install the horn key, connecting the electrical wiring securely. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
