Warning: Before doing any work on the airbag system, disconnect the negative battery terminal. After completing the work, reconnect the connector and, making sure that no one is inside the car, connect the battery.
All models since 1993 have been equipped with an airbag, which is designed to prevent serious injury to the driver during an accident. A similar airbag is installed on some models for the front seat passenger. The airbag system deploys in the event of a severe frontal collision above a certain force, depending on the type of collision. The airbag inflates in milliseconds and prevents the driver from hitting the steering wheel or the passenger from hitting the dashboard, greatly reducing the risk of injury. Almost immediately after inflation, the airbag begins to release air.
Each time the ignition is switched on, the airbag control unit performs a self-test. The self-test takes approximately 4 seconds, during which time the airbag warning light on the instrument panel is illuminated. After the self-test is completed, the lamp should turn off. If the warning light does not come on when the engine is started, does not turn off after a sufficient self-test period, or stays on for the entire duration of driving, there is damage to the air bag system. The vehicle should be shown to an Opel dealer as soon as possible.
On vehicles with a passenger air bag installed, do not install telephones, cassette storage boxes, extra mirrors, etc. in the area of the air bag, as serious injury to the passenger may be caused.
