Changing engine oil and oil filter (Opel Frontera B)

Contents: Viscosity of motor oil ⬇ Motor oil additives ⬇
Replacement of engine oil and oil filter should be carried out:
  • on 2.2 16V engine (Y22SE): every 15,000 km/ 10,000 miles/ 1 year;
  • on DTI 2.2 16V engine (Y22DTH): every 30,000 km/ 20,000 miles/ 1 year;
  • on 3.2 V6 engine (6VD1-W): every 30,000 km/ 20,000 miles/ 1 year.

Viscosity of motor oil

Motor oil reduces friction between sliding surfaces, which reduces wear of pistons with piston rings and cylinders, bearings and valve mechanism parts.

Motor oil is also used for micro-sealing between pistons, piston rings and cylinder walls, since there is always a gap of several microns between these parts. Thanks to the additional sealing effect of the oil, the high gas pressure resulting from combustion is transferred without losses to the piston crown and converted into kinetic energy. This ensures optimum engine power.

Engine oil quality

The quality of the motor oil must correspond to the ACEA class, although the use of higher quality motor oil is permitted.

SAE class (Society of Automotive Engineers)

The fluidity of the oil is indicated by the viscosity class. The corresponding classes are established by the American Institute of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), for example, SAE 5 W-30. The lower the first number, the easier the oil flows at low temperatures (W = winter). Oil 0 W flows at a temperature of minus 30°C, at 5 W this figure increases to minus 25°C, at 15 W - to minus 15°C. The higher the second number, the better the oil withstands high temperatures.

The fluidity of the oil is indicated by the viscosity class. The corresponding classes are…

Motor oil additives

The engines are designed to operate with new high-performance motor oils at high crankshaft speeds without the addition of motor oil additives.

Note: When disposing of used engine oil, please comply with local environmental regulations.

Engine oil capacity:
  • y22DTH engine: 6.0 l
  • y22SE engine: 4.5 l
  • engine 6VD1-W: 4.7 l

Engine oil volume between MIN and MAX marks on the oil level indicator: 1.0 l
