I - camshaft pulleys
II - crankshaft pulley
Timing belt tensioner indicator position
I - new toothed belt
II - reusable toothed belt
Warning! The toothed belt must be replaced when the engine is cold.
Removing
1. Set the number one piston to TDC on the compression stroke.
2. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
3. On 1.6L models, unscrew the bottom cover mounting bolt and remove the bottom timing belt cover.
4. On 1.6L models, check that the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys are aligned with the top surface of the cylinder head and the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer (see fig. The location of the alignment marks of the pulleys of the camshafts and the crankshaft when installing the piston of the first cylinder at TDC in the compression stroke).
5. Unscrew the two bolts securing the camshaft sensor to the cylinder head and move the sensor to the side.
6. On 1.8 and 2.0L models, check that the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys are aligned with the marks on the cylinder head cover, and the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer on the housing (marks are indicated by arrows).
7. Loosen the toothed belt tensioner bolt (1). Using a wrench, turn the tensioner lever clockwise until it stops, as a result of which the belt tension will decrease. Then tighten the tensioner mounting bolt (the key hole is indicated by the number 2).
8. Remove the toothed belt from the pulleys. Do not turn the crankshaft or camshafts before installing the toothed belt.
9. Check the toothed belt for wear, splitting or oiling. If there are traces of oil on the toothed belt, find the source of the oil leak and repair it before installing a new belt.
Installation
1. Thoroughly clean the toothed belt pulleys, tensioner pulley and idler pulley.
2. Check that the timing marks on the pulleys (A - crankshaft pulley mark) aligned with pointers (IN).
3. Install the toothed belt on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft pulleys so that the front of the toothed belt is constantly tensioned. Lastly, install the toothed belt onto the water pump pulley and tensioner pulley.
4. Loosen the toothed belt tensioner bolt to release the tensioner spring. Turn the tensioner lever counterclockwise until the tensioner pointer reaches the stop. Tighten the tensioner bolt.
5. Re-check that the alignment marks on the pulleys are aligned with the pointers.
6. At the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft two full turns.
7. Check again that the alignment marks of the toothed belt pulleys are aligned with the pointers, then loosen the toothed belt tensioner mounting bolt.
8. If a new toothed belt is being installed, the tensioner must be adjusted so that the pointer is aligned with the fuse on the base plate.
9. If the toothed belt is reinstalled, the tensioner must be adjusted so that the pointer is 4 mm to the left of the fuse on the base plate (see fig. Timing belt tensioner indicator position).
10. Install the timing belt guard and crankshaft pulley. On the 1.6L model, the camshaft sensor must be installed before the timing belt guard is installed.
