Location of identification marks on the camshaft bearing caps and on the cylinder head
Places for applying a thin layer of sealant to the cylinder head mating with the right camshaft bearing caps
Removing
1. Remove the toothed belt. Before removing the toothed belt, turn the crankshaft in the opposite direction by about 60° (4 teeth), which will set the camshafts so that the pressure of the valve springs is even throughout the entire length of the shaft.
2. Remove pulleys from camshafts.
3. On the intake camshaft, working in a spiral sequence from outside to inside, evenly and gradually loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts. Once the valve spring pressure has ceased, unscrew the bolts completely. Bearing caps and their mounting locations on the cylinder head are numbered. (Intake camshaft 1 to 5. Exhaust camshaft 6 to 10).
4. Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head.
5. Repeat the steps to remove the camshaft that controls the exhaust valves.
6. Using a rubber suction cup, remove the pushrods from the top of the cylinder head and store each pushrod in a separate bag for reinstalling the pushrods later.
Warning! Do not overturn hydraulic tappets as oil may leak from them.
Examination
1. Check the running surfaces of the camshaft bearings and the contours of the camshaft lobes for wear. If there is any wear, replace the camshaft. If the camshaft bearings are worn, the cylinder head must be replaced.
2. Check the condition of the working surfaces of the hydraulic tappets that come into contact with the camshaft lobes.
Installation
1. Lubricate the hydraulic tappets with clean engine oil and slide each tappet into place in the cylinder head.
2. Lubricate the camshaft journals and lobes with clean engine oil and install the camshaft into the cylinder head. Check that the crankshaft is 60°back from the top dead center of the first cylinder, and rotate each camshaft so that the lobes on the first cylinder face up. Temporarily install the pulleys on the camshafts and rotate them so that the pulley alignment mark is offset 4 teeth before TDC.
3. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the mating surfaces of the right camshaft bearing caps (see fig. Places for applying a thin layer of sealant to the cylinder head mating with the right camshaft bearing caps).
4. Install the bearing caps according to the identification marks.
5. On the intake camshaft, tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts by hand, then spirally tighten the bearing cap bolts gradually and in sequence, turning each bolt half a turn in one pass, until each cover will not touch the cylinder head. Then, in the same sequence, tighten the bolts to the required torque in several steps.
6. Tighten the exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts in the same way.
7. Install new camshaft oil seals.
8. Install the camshaft pulleys.
9. Align all the pulley alignment marks with the pointers and install the toothed belt.
10. Install the cylinder head cover and toothed belt guards.
