Top dead center (TDC) piston is the point through which each piston passes as the crankshaft rotates. Each piston reaches TDC at the end of the compression stroke and then again at the end of the exhaust stroke. In order to install the engine timing mechanism, the TDC of the piston of the first cylinder in the compression stroke is used. Cylinder N1 is on the toothed belt side.
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery and unscrew the spark plugs.
1.6L engines
2. To access the timing marks on the camshaft pulley, remove the upper timing belt cover.
3. Turn the engine crankshaft by the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt until the alignment marks on the camshaft pulleys (A) will not point towards each other and will not align with the top of the cylinder head (IN).
Engines 1.8 and 2.0 l
4. To access the alignment marks of the camshaft pulleys, remove the upper casing of the toothed belt.
5. Turn the engine crankshaft by the crankshaft pulley bolt until the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys are in the upper position and align with the pointers on the cylinder head cover (1). Align the mark on the crankshaft pulley with the pointer on the housing (2).
