1.4 and 1.6 liter engines produced since June 1990
From June 1990, all 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines are equipped with an automatic toothed belt tensioner. These engines can be identified by the flat surface of the timing belt cover above the camshaft and by an additional tensioner pulley bolt under the crankshaft.
Installation and adjustment conditions
Installation should only be carried out with a cold engine.
The crankshaft pulley and toothed belt cover must be removed.
Installation
Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the ignition timing before TDC.
The mark on the camshaft pulley must match the mark on the back cover of the toothed belt (see arrows in top picture), and the mark on the crankshaft pulley must match the mark on the engine housing.

Loosen the coolant pump mounting bolt, but do not remove it completely.
Put on the toothed belt in the following sequence: crankshaft pulley, camshaft pulley, coolant pump pulley (those. counterclock-wise).
Tension the toothed belt by turning the cooling system pump using the Opel KM-412-A key.
Attention! The movable element 1 of the tension roller 2 must be at the right stop (see fig. D5445).
Make two complete revolutions of the crankshaft in the direction of rotation until the piston of the 1st cylinder stops at TDC. To turn, use the head by installing it on the crankshaft sprocket bolt.
Attention! Rotate the crankshaft evenly, without jerks, to prevent jumping of the teeth of the toothed belt. Do not change the position of the cooling system pump during rotation of the crankshaft.
Loosen the toothed belt by turning the coolant pump in the direction of the arrow (see top of fig. D5446), achieving the coincidence of marks 1 and 2 on the basis of the tension roller.
In this position, tighten the coolant pump bolt to 8 Nm.
Attention! If during any work the toothed belt must be loosened, it is necessary to move the tension roller to the side until the holes 3 coincide (fig.05446). In this position, insert the bolt into the hole and thus fix the tensioner. After that, the belt can be removed.
Install the toothed belt cover.
