In the center of the steering wheel of a car equipped with a driver's airbag, there is an inscription AIRBAG.
If there is a front passenger airbag, a similar inscription is applied to the instrument panel above the glove box.
The system includes cushions with gas-filled cylinders placed in the steering wheel and instrument panel of the car, an electronic control unit with a shock sensor and a warning lamp on the instrument panel
The initiation of the pillow occurs during a strong frontal impact of the car, the vector of which is in sector 30 from the center line. If the car hits a hard obstacle, the airbags will deploy even at low speeds. To deploy airbags after a collision with a deformable obstacle (e.g. another car) vehicle speed must be high enough.
Note. In view of the foregoing, the criteria that determine the deployment of an airbag system are the direction and nature of the impact, as well as the rigidity of the vehicle and the obstacles it collides with, and in no way received by the vehicle as a result of an accident.
When the system is activated, the airbag inflates within milliseconds, thus providing additional protection for the driver and front passenger by limiting their freedom of movement in the longitudinal direction.
The system provides the maximum level of protection only when the backrests and headrests of the vehicle's front seats are properly adjusted. With a proper seat, the driver should keep the steering wheel slightly bent at the elbows. The passenger seat should be moved as far back as possible with the backrest upright. Do not place your head, arms or legs on airbag covers.
Attention! Remember that the presence of airbags in the car does not relieve the driver and front passenger from the need to fasten their seat belts while driving!
The airbag system does not initiate when:
- a) Ignition off;
- b) The force of the frontal impact is small;
- c) The car rolls over in an accident;
- d) The impact is not frontal.
Faults in the airbag system are monitored by a built-in self-diagnosis system. The status of the driver's system is informed by a control lamp on the dashboard of the car (see above).
Attention!
- To avoid personal injury, do not place any objects in the space that the airbag inflates when it inflates.
- Take special care when servicing components located in the vicinity of the airbag - accidental initiation of the airbag by careless handling can lead to serious injury.
- Removal of the steering wheel and instrument panel of models equipped with airbags should only be carried out by an Opel dealer or service center.
- The airbag is designed to deploy only once, after which it must be replaced.
- Do not place any foreign objects on the steering wheel and instrument panel. Use only a dry or well-wrung damp cloth to wipe surfaces. Do not use any solvents.
- Disposal of a vehicle equipped with airbags or airbag assemblies must only be carried out through an Opel dealer.
Attention! It is forbidden to install a rear-facing child seat on the front seat of vehicles equipped with an airbag. A sticker with the appropriate warning is usually attached to the instrument panel on the side of the door.
