The two-door version of the car, called Frontera Sport, has a shortened wheelbase. The four-door version has an extended base and a 16-valve engine (16V) "ECOTEC". The distinctive feature of this engine is its high torque already at 2600 rpm. The engine has 4 valves per cylinder, direct injection (without distributor) ignition, Motronic M1.5.4 injection control system, detonation ignition control, exhaust toxicity reduction systems.
The front suspension is independent, with double wishbones, telescopic shock absorbers, anti-roll bar and torsion bars for adjusting the ride height.
The rear suspension is a rigid axle mounted on leaf springs or coil springs, depending on the model. Differential lock is available on select models.
The hydraulic brake system is divided into two circuits and is equipped with a vacuum booster and a brake pressure regulator. The front wheel brakes are disc brakes, the rear ones are drum or disc brakes, depending on the equipment. The parking brake acts on the built-in drums of the rear wheels. Anti-lock braking system can be installed as additional equipment.
The clutch drive is hydraulic.
