A sign of the need to replace the front crankshaft oil seal is oil leakage through its edge. In this case, the oil is sprayed by the rotating crankshaft pulley, as a result of which the entire front of the engine and the timing belt are oiled.
The reasons for oiling the clutch discs may be a leak in the input shaft oil seal of the gearbox or the rear crankshaft oil seal.
Engine and transmission oils differ in smell, therefore, with a certain skill, you can determine which oil seal is damaged.
Note. There is another way to determine the type of oil. Drop oil into water poured into a vessel in a thin layer (maybe in a puddle). Gear oil will spread over the entire surface of the water in the form of an iridescent film, and engine oil will remain in the form of a drop similar to a lentil grain.
You will need: all the tools needed to remove the timing belt (see Replacing the timing belt), gearboxes (see Removal and installation of a transmission), clutch (see Removal and installation of clutch), flywheel (see Removal, troubleshooting and installation of the flywheel), as well as a screwdriver and a hammer.
For replacement front crankshaft oil seal, do the following.
1. Disconnect the wire from the terminal «minus» battery.
2. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke (see Setting the piston of the first cylinder to the TDC position of the compression stroke).
3. Remove the timing belt (see Replacing the timing belt).
4. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
5. Remove the key from the crankshaft nose groove.
6. Using a screwdriver or wire hook, remove the oil seal from the oil pump housing.
7. Lubricate the working edge of the new oil seal with engine oil, install it in the oil pump housing, orienting the working edge inside the engine, and press the oil seal into the pump housing until it stops with a mandrel. As a mandrel, you can use a head from a tool kit of a suitable size or an old oil seal.
8. Install all removed parts and components of the gas distribution mechanism in the reverse order of removal.
9. Adjust the tension of the timing belt (see Replacing the timing belt) and accessory drive belt (see Accessory drive belt replacement).
For replacement rear crankshaft oil seal, perform the following operations.
1. Remove the gearbox (see Removal and installation of a transmission).
2. Remove the clutch (see Removal and installation of clutch).
3. Remove the flywheel (see Removal, troubleshooting and installation of the flywheel).
4. Remove the oil pan (see Replacing the oil sump seal).
5. Remove the screw securing the crankshaft position sensor..
6.... and remove the sensor.
7. Remove the setting disk of the crankshaft position sensor.
8. Turn out two bolts of fastening of a cover of the back radical bearing of a cranked shaft …
9.... and remove the cover.
10. Take out from a nest in the block of cylinders a back epiploon of a cranked shaft.
11. Grease a working edge of a new epiploon with engine oil.
12. To avoid damaging the rear oil seal lip, install the oil seal using an appropriately sized drift.
13. Establish the removed knots and details in an order, the return to removal.
Note. When installing the flywheel, lubricate the threaded part of the flywheel mounting bolts with an anaerobic thread locker and tighten them evenly in a criss-cross pattern.
