Removing
1. Bring the front wheels of the car into a straight line. Remove the ignition key and lock the steering wheel.
2. Remove the front subframe (see Removal and installation of the front subframe).
3. Turn out bolts of fastening of an arm of a back support of a suspension bracket of the power unit to a stretcher.
4. If equipped, remove the bolts securing the high-pressure hose support bracket to the subframe.
5. Place a suitable drain container under the steering gear housing.
6. Give nipple nuts and disconnect hydraulic tubes from the crankcase of the steering mechanism.
7. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the steering pump, release the harness from the intermediate clamps on the subframe - try to remember the correct route for laying the wires.
8. Give fixing nuts and remove assemblage of the steering pump with the tank and hydraulic lines from a stretcher/case of the steering mechanism.
The TRW pump is fitted with a round reservoir, while the Delphi/Saginaw pump is fitted with an angular reservoir.
9. Remove the fixing bolts and remove the steering mechanism from the subframe, - if necessary, first remove the anti-roll bar (see Removal and installation of the front anti-roll bar).
Manufacturers recommend replacing all mounting bolts without fail.
10. If necessary, remove the steering rods (see Removal and installation of tips of steering draughts and Removal and installation of steering draft).
Steering pumps are supplied to the spare parts market both complete with rods and without them.
Remove the rubber seals from the shaft.
Installation
1. Install tie rod ends (see Removal and installation of tips of steering draughts and Removal and installation of steering draft), - do not forget to put rubber seals on the shaft.
2. Thoroughly wipe the mating surfaces of the steering box and subframe. Establish the steering mechanism on the regular place. Screw fixing bolts and tighten them with the required effort.
3. If removed, reinstall the anti-roll bar (see Removal and installation of the front anti-roll bar).
4. Reinstall the steering pump assembly with hydraulic fluid reservoir and connecting lines. Screw on the fixing nuts and tighten them to the required torque.
5. Restore the original wiring connection, - fix the harness in the intermediate clamps on the subframe.
6. Plant new rubber o-rings on the hydraulic tubes and connect the latter to the steering gear housing. Tighten the union nuts of the union connections with the required force.
7. If equipped, reinstall the support hydraulic pipes/hoses on the subframe. Screw fixing bolts and tighten them with the required effort.
8. Install the bracket for the rear suspension support of the power unit on the subframe, tighten the fasteners with the required force.
9. Install the front subframe on the car (see Removal and installation of the front subframe).
10. After bleeding the power steering system, remove air plugs from its path (see Removal of air from the hydraulic path of the power steering).
11. At the first opportunity, drive the car to a specialized car service workshop to check and adjust the toe-in of the front wheels.
