Maintenance work
The hinges on the front axle between the transverse arm and the steering knuckle are maintenance free. The steel ball heads of the axle joints are placed in permanent lubrication and additionally in a plastic shell. Rubber dust caps protect against moisture and dirt. Penetrating dirt acts as an abrasive in the hinge; dampness causes corrosion over time.
Turn the steering wheel all the way.
Check the axle pivot caps on the right and left for damage.
One damaged cap cannot be replaced; you need to completely change the axle hinge, because. probably dirt and water have already penetrated through the crack.
Such a hinge is considered defective even before a gap becomes noticeable in it or a creak appears.
Replace hinge.
At the same time, it is also recommended to check the rubber-metal bearings with which the transverse arm is attached to the axle carrier.
There must be no gap in the control arm support.
Unevenly extruded rubber material may indicate poor ride quality.
Replace worn rubber mounts.
On right: the axle pivot is fixed with a castellated nut and cotter pin. dust cap (arrow) should be checked for damage at regular intervals.
Left: If the dust cap on the tie rod head is damaged, the tie rod head must be replaced.
