The steering wheel turns - the steering gear - it is located behind the engine in front of the front wall to the passenger compartment - converts into forward-return motion so that the front wheels can turn. The Vectra has rack and pinion steering. The gear at the end of the steering column grabs the rack and shifts it - depending on the rotation of the steering wheel - to the right or left. These movements are transmitted by both transverse steering rods, screwed to the rack, to the movable steering knuckles, and by them to the wheels.
On our Vectra with stock steering, a piston at the right end of the rack in the steering gear provides assistance. It is shifted to the right or left by pumping hydraulic oil. In which direction the oil is pumped, you determine when you turn the steering wheel. This rotation is transmitted to the crane hydraulic apparatus, which regulates the direction and magnitude of the fluid flow. The pressure in the hydraulic system is created by a vane pump, which is driven by the engine via a V-ribbed belt.
