Axle joints — inspection and replacement (Opel Astra G)

1. Drive slowly in a circle with the steering wheel turned all the way, and check for metal-on-metal clicking sounds coming from the front of the car. Turn the steering wheel all the way the other way and listen again. If you hear metallic clicking sounds, the outer axle joint is worn and should be replaced.

2. To check the inner CV joint, lift the car and try to turn the wheel while holding the axle shaft. Then try to turn the axle shaft while holding the inner joint. Rock the joint housing from side to side. Any noticeable play indicates that the joint is worn and needs to be replaced.

Attention! On later models the inner joints of the axle shaft (tripod type) are changed only together with the axle shaft.

3. Remove the axle shafts.

4. Remove the retaining ring (see photo) Remove the cover of the faulty hinge.

5. Install a new joint with a retaining ring on the axle shaft, apply grease to the joint (see photo) and put on the cover.
