Examination
During a test run on a limited area, try to determine the condition of the external CV joints by ear. A worn hinge during sharp turns makes a characteristic click - the steeper the turn, the greater the load on the hinge, and the more clearly the clicks are heard. A defective joint must be replaced.
To assess the condition of the internal hinges, cock the parking brake, jack up the front of the car and place it on props. If equipped, remove the crankcase protection. Pull the inner joint up and down, then grab it with one hand, and with the other try to rotate the shaft in both directions. If any noticeable play is detected, the hinge must be replaced.
Replacement
On models of recent years of production, internal tripod-type hinges are used. Such hinges are not individually supplied to the spare parts market and, in case of failure, they are replaced assembled with the shaft.
1. Remove the drive shaft (see Section Removal and installation of power shafts).
2. Release the bandages and slide the protective cover off the damaged hinge.
3. Using a screwdriver or circlip pliers, pry open the pivot retaining circlip.

4. Use a heavy, soft-faced hammer to knock the hinge off the shaft.
5. Install a new retaining ring in the groove of the new joint. Place the joint on the shaft until the circlip snaps into place in the receiving groove.
6. Pack the hinge with the correct type of grease.
7. Squeeze out the remaining grease into the case, pull it over the hinge and secure with bandage tapes (see Section Replacement of protective covers of SHRUS).
8. Install the shaft on the car (see Section Removal and installation of power shafts).
