Note: Before you start, see Chapter 2. For accurate adjustment, you will need a tachometer and an exhaust gas analyzer (CO meter).
1. To check idle speed and mixture adjustment, the following conditions must be met:
- a) The engine must be warmed up to normal operating temperature
- b) All consumers of electrical energy must be turned off (cooling fan, heater blower, lights, etc.)
- c) Ignition timing and spark plug gaps must be correctly adjusted - see Section 1 and Section 5
- d) Throttle cable free play must be properly adjusted - see Chapter 11
- e) There must be no leakage from the air inlet and the air filter must be clean
- f) On automatic models, always select the position "R".
2. Connect the tachometer and exhaust gas analyzer according to the manufacturers instructions.
3. Start the engine, accelerate it to 2000 rpm for about 30 seconds, then set it to idle. If the idle speed is outside the limits specified in the Specifications, adjust it with the adjustment screw (see illustration).
4. After setting the correct idle speed, check the CO level in the exhaust gas. If the CO content is outside the limits specified in the Specifications, adjust it using the idle mixture quality adjustment screw. During production, the screw is closed with a plug (see illustration).
5. On models with automatic transmission, when the gear selector is in the "D" (all electrical consumers are switched off), the idle speed should not drop noticeably. If, however, it drops noticeably, it is necessary to seek the advice of an Opel dealer in order to check the idle system using special equipment.
6. With the idle mixture set correctly, adjust the idle speed if necessary.
7. If the cooling fan turns on during adjustment, stop the adjustment and continue when the fan turns off.
8. After setting the idle speed and mixture correctly, shut off the engine and disconnect the test equipment.
9. Install a new plug on the idle mixture adjustment screw.
