The gearbox converts the torque transmitted from the engine in magnitude and direction. This is necessary to ensure optimal speed and cross-country ability of the vehicle, as well as for the most economical operation of the engine and the movement of the vehicle in reverse. In addition, the gearbox disconnects the engine and transmission when the vehicle is stopped, parked, and when it is coasting with the engine running.
The gearbox components are housed in a crankcase which is bolted to the rear of the engine.
The torque from the engine is transmitted through the clutch to the input shaft of the gearbox. The output shaft of the gearbox transmits torque through the transfer case and cardan shafts to the front and rear axles. The gear is engaged by moving the sliding synchronizer clutch, as a result of which the gear is rigidly connected to the gearbox shaft.
The gearbox is a very complex unit and its repair must be carried out in a specialized workshop.
To remove the gearbox, you need to lift the car and secure it in this position. It is also necessary to use a stationary jack.
The transfer case is similar to the one previously found on the Monterey and the previous Frontera, but now features mechanical four-wheel drive.
The identification number is stamped on the left side of the gearbox intermediate plate.
