Attention: Attempts to independently interfere with the functioning of electronic systems, as well as their repair, are guaranteed to lead to system failure! All maintenance and repair work must be performed only at branded service stations, by personnel specially trained for this purpose, using the appropriate adjustment and diagnostic equipment!
The standard equipment of all models considered in this Manual provides for the installation of an anti-lock braking system, a brake booster and a brake force distribution system. In addition, depending on the equipment, several more electronic braking control systems can be installed. All systems are closely interconnected and complement each other.
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents premature wheel locking during braking by modulating the hydraulic fluid pressure in each of the brake mechanisms. This increases braking efficiency almost 2 times and reduces the braking distance. In addition, the absence of complete wheel locking ensures that the vehicle remains controllable. On Vectra-C/Signum models, ABS integrates emergency braking control functions.
The Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) system monitors the braking force on the rear axle and, depending on the axle load, changes the pressure in the brake circuits.
Anti-slip system (Traction Control - TC) prevents the drive wheels from slipping when the gas pedal is pressed sharply, for example, when driving on a road with a wet surface. If the wheels slip, the vehicle system forcibly reduces engine power and, if necessary, brakes the corresponding wheel - at the same time, the indicator of deterioration of the traction properties of the road surface is activated on the instrument panel (see Chapter "Controls and operating techniques", Section 16).
The anti-skid system (ESP) along with ABS reduces the risk of uncontrolled skidding, both during vehicle braking and during various maneuvers and turns. ESP operates in tandem with the anti-skid system (TS).
When cornering at high speed or making sharp maneuvers, the ESP sensors collect information about the steering wheel angle and the turning speed of the vehicle. If there is a risk of skidding and the vehicle is unstable, the optimal driving mode is selected by braking individual wheels and adjusting engine power, and the vehicle is stabilized while moving along the selected trajectory - the corresponding indicator is activated on the instrument panel.
Warning: Electronic systems improve the vehicle's handling and braking properties, but will not prevent collisions due to careless and dangerous driving! Do not rely on auxiliary systems for careless driving - the driver is fully responsible for traffic safety!
Instructions for operation of vehicles equipped with electronic systems
Attention: Before carrying out electric welding work, it is necessary to disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the electronic systems control unit - disconnection should be done only with the ignition off! Be careful when performing body painting work - even short-term heating of the control unit above +80'C will lead to its failure!
The features of driving a car using electronic control systems are given in Chapter "Controls and operating principles".
The built-in control system switches off the electronic braking control if any defect or malfunction occurs in the electrical circuits (for example, a cable break) or if the supply voltage is too low (battery voltage below 10V). In some cases, the shutdown occurs when defects in the chassis and suspension of the car are detected that affect the correct operation of the braking system. When the electronic control systems are disabled, the service braking system continues to function in the normal mode. The shutdown is confirmed by the activation of the corresponding indicator on the instrument panel (the activation modes of indicators, control lamps and warning messages are described in the corresponding sections of the Chapter "Controls and operating techniques"). The most common cause of failures is a voltage drop in the vehicle's on-board electrical system or a broken wiring - check the reliability of the wire fastening on the battery terminals, the integrity of the sensor connecting lines. If the lamps light up at the start of movement and go out again after a while, this indicates that the battery voltage was initially too low, and then increased as a result of charging during generator operation - at the first opportunity, check the condition of the battery and recharge it in stationary conditions.
All other checks of electronic systems must be carried out at a service station using diagnostic equipment.
