Attention: Attempts to independently intervene in the functioning of electronic systems, as well as repair them, are guaranteed to lead to system failure! All maintenance and repair work must be carried out only at branded service stations, by specially trained personnel using the appropriate tuning and diagnostic equipment!
The standard equipment of all models considered in this Manual provides for the installation of an anti-lock brake system, in addition, depending on the configuration, several more electronic braking control systems can be installed. All systems are closely interconnected and complement each other. Anti-lock brake system (ABS) prevents premature blocking of the wheels during braking by modulating the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in each of the brake mechanisms. Thanks to this, braking efficiency is almost doubled and the braking distance is shortened. In addition, the absence of a complete wheel lock ensures that the vehicle remains steerable. On Astra-H and Zafira-B models, ABS integrates emergency braking control and cornering braking control (Cornering Brake Control - CBC).
Anti-slip system
(Traction Control System — TCS) prevents slipping of the drive wheels when the gas pedal is pressed sharply, for example, while driving on a wet road. If wheel spin occurs, the vehicle system forcibly reduces engine power and, if necessary, brakes the corresponding wheel - while the indicator of deterioration of traction properties of the road surface is activated on the instrument panel (see chapter «Controls and methods of operation», Section 16).
Anti-skid system (ESP) along with ABS reduces the risk of uncontrolled skidding, both during braking of the car, and when making various kinds of maneuvers and turns. ESP works in tandem with the traction control system (TCS). When cornering at high speeds or when the vehicle is making sharp maneuvers, the ESP sensors collect information about the steering angle and the vehicle's rate of turn. In the event of a risk of skidding and an unstable position of the car, by braking individual wheels and adjusting the engine power, the optimal driving mode is selected, and the car is stabilized while moving along the selected trajectory - the corresponding indicator is activated on the instrument panel (see chapter «Controls and methods of operation»).
Attention: Electronic systems improve the handling and braking properties of the car, but will not be able to prevent collisions during careless and dangerous driving! Avoid carelessness in driving, relying on auxiliary systems - the responsibility for traffic safety lies entirely with the driver!
Operating Instructions for Vehicles Equipped with Electronic Systems
Attention: Before carrying out electric welding work, it is necessary to disconnect the electrical wiring connector from the electronic systems control unit - disconnection should be done only with the ignition off! Be careful when performing body painting work - even a short-term heating of the control unit above + 80°C will lead to its failure!
Features of driving a car using electronic control systems are given in the Chapter «Controls and prima operation». The built-in monitoring system disables the electronic braking control in the event of any defect or malfunction in the electrical circuits (e.g. cable break) or if the supply voltage is too low (battery voltage below 10V). In some cases, shutdown occurs when defects in the chassis and suspension of the car are detected, affecting the correct operation of the brake system. When the electronic control systems are turned off, the service brake system continues to function normally. Deactivation is confirmed by the activation of the corresponding indicator on the instrument panel (activation modes of indicators, control lamps and warning messages are described in the relevant sections of the Chapter «Controls and methods of operation»). The most common cause of failures is a voltage drop in the vehicle's on-board electrical network or a broken wiring - check the reliability of the wires on the battery terminals, the integrity of the connecting lines of the sensors. If the lamps come on at the beginning of the movement and after a while go out again, this indicates that the battery voltage was initially too low, and then increased as a result of charging while the generator was running - check the condition of the battery as soon as possible and recharge it in stationary conditions.
All other checks of electronic systems must be carried out at the service station using diagnostic equipment.
