To turn the crankshaft by hand, you need to rotate it in the direction of the arrow by the central bolt of the crankshaft belt pulley. As a tool, you need a torx socket wrench.
Left: TDC is considered found if the mark on the belt pulley (1) the crankshaft is opposite the arrow on the rear cover (2) toothed belt.
On right: Additionally, with the toothed belt cover removed, the mark on the belt pulley (3) camshaft must match the mark on the rear cover (4) toothed belt. Of course, in 16V engines with a displacement of 1.8 / 2.0 l, this applies to both camshaft pulleys.
- If there is a sufficiently level surface, move the vehicle forward accordingly in 5th gear.
- Or lift up the front of the Opel on one side as you would when changing a wheel, shift into 5th gear and rotate the free-hanging wheel, which sets the engine in motion.
- Or unscrew the spark plugs (the engine is easier to turn).
- Turn the engine clockwise with a bent cap or torx socket wrench mounted on the crankshaft belt pulley.
- Never turn the engine by the fastening bolt of the camshaft pulley with the toothed belt cover removed! Otherwise, the toothed belt may jump - engine damage.
Setting the 1st cylinder to the position of the ignition moment
In a four-stroke engine, the piston reaches top dead center twice during four strokes (TDC): once - when the inlet mixture ignites, the second time - after the emission of exhaust gases, with the inlet of the air-fuel mixture starting immediately after that. During various adjustment work, a position is usually required in which the ignition spark jumps into the 1st cylinder (located on the right side of the road).
- Remove the front toothed belt cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft until the mark on the front side of the camshaft pulley is at the same height as the mark on the rear timing belt cover.
- Of course, in 16V engines with a displacement of 1.8/2.0 liters, this applies to both camshaft pulleys.
- On a 16V engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters, the marks on the camshaft pulleys must be opposite each other and coincide with the top edge of the cylinder head.
- For all engines: the mark on the crankshaft pulley must be opposite the arrow.
- If the crankshaft pulley is removed, then the mark on the toothed belt drive pulley is turned vertically down to the corresponding cutout.
