The Simtec 56.5 fuel injection system is identical to the Multec-S system found on 1.6L DOCH engines. The only difference in the system is that instead of the intake manifold absolute pressure sensor, an air flow meter is installed.
An additional feature of the Simtec system is that the air supply path to the engine is of variable length in order to guarantee maximum efficiency at high engine speeds and maximum power at low engine speeds. The intake manifold is divided into two paths of different lengths. Each intake manifold path is equipped with a valve. The valve is controlled by the ECU via a solenoid valve and a vacuum diaphragm.
At engine speeds less than 3,600 rpm, the valves remain closed and the air entering the engine must follow a long path, which leads to an increase in torque.
At higher engine speeds, the ECU switches the solenoid valve and vacuum acts on the diaphragm, which opens a short path for air to the engine.
