The following describes some of the work related to the transmission, which can be performed in a home workshop.
Replacing the gasket between the transfer case housing and intermediate housing - MSG gearbox
If traces of leaks are found in the area of the junction of the transfer case crankcase and the intermediate crankcase, the gasket must be replaced.
1. Remove the shift lever as described above.
2. Put the car on stands.
3. Remove the front and rear driveshafts as described in the appropriate section.
4. Drain the oil from the box.
5. Remove the shield under the transfer case.
6. Remove the gearbox rear cross member as described for the gearbox.
7. Disconnect the flexible speedometer drive shaft (until 1997 release).
8. Unplug electrical speedometer connector (since 1997 release).
9. Turn away bolts of fastening of a case of a distributing box from the back party.
10. Pull back the box crankcase complete with intermediate crankcase.
11. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the intermediate case and transfer case
12. Connect both crankcases with a new gasket.
13. Tighten the fastening bolts evenly to 40 Nm.
14. Perform other work in the reverse order of removal.
15. Install the transmission mount cross member.
16. Finally, add oil to the gearbox.
Replacing the rear radial oil seal of the transfer case housing
1. Remove the rear driveshaft as described in the appropriate section.
2. Carefully, without damaging the crankcase, remove the MSG gearbox oil seal with a screwdriver.
3. If a MUA gearbox is installed, remove the driveshaft rear flange and remove the oil seal. The flange must be kept from turning.
4. Lubricate the working surface of the oil seal with engine oil
5. Press it with a pipe into the gearbox housing.
6. If MUA gearboxes are installed, press the drive flange onto the shaft. Tighten the nut to 167 Nm. Keep the flange from turning.
7. Attach the cardan shaft.
8. In conclusion, check the oil level in the gearbox, as described in the appropriate subsection.
Replacing the front radial oil seal of the drive shaft of the transfer case housing - MUA gearbox
1. Remove the front propeller shaft.
2. Remove the front drive shaft flange while holding the shaft from turning.
3. Remove the oil seal with a screwdriver, being careful not to damage the crankcase.
4. Lubricate the working surface of the oil seal with engine oil.
5. Press it with a pipe into the crankcase.
6. Press the flange onto the shaft.
7. While holding the shaft from turning, tighten the flange fastening nut to 137 Nm.
8. Install the front propeller shaft.
9. Finally, check the oil level in the gearbox and add oil if necessary.
Replacing the speedometer drive gear
1. Disconnect the flexible speedometer drive shaft.
2. Loosen the speedometer drive gear bolt
3. Remove the housing, gaskets and drive gear from the rear crankcase.
4. Install a new gear with housing and gaskets.
5. Tighten the fastening bolt to 15 Nm.
6. Check the oil level in the gearbox.
