Replacing the rear axle bearing (Opel Frontera A)

Drum brakes



To replace a bearing you need to have a press.

1. Clamp the axle shaft in a vice.

2. Use a chisel to cut off the bearing retaining ring. Use protective glasses when doing this.

3. Press out the axle.

4. After this, you can remove the bearing mounting flange and brake shield.

5. If the brake shield mounting bolt is being replaced, it can be pressed out of the flange.

6. Insert a new serrated bolt into the flange hole.

7. After this, press it in completely.

8. Install the brake shield and lock plate onto the axle shaft.

9. Then install the bearing and snap ring.

Disc brakes



1. The cross-section of the axle bearing assembly with ABS is shown in the illustration. The illustration shows the additional seal being installed here.

2. After removing the axle shaft, remove the brake pads (see the relevant section).

3. Press the axle shaft through the bearing housing.

4. If necessary, the bearing can be pressed out of the housing.

5. Remove the oil seal (if there is one) ABS rings from the bridge sleeve.

6. If necessary, press out the brake shield mounting bolt from the axle flange.

7. Install a new seal into the bridge sleeve (if there is one) for ABS ring.

8. When replacing a bearing, it is pressed into the housing.

9. The bearing seal ring and housing bore are pre-lubricated. The ring should point outward from the axle shaft.

10. Install the bearing housing onto the brake shield.

11. Install the bearing with the housing and ABS ring on the axle shaft and press it on.

12. Now the axle shaft can be installed in place.
