Do not crank the engine with the chain tensioners removed!
Upper chain tensioner
Removing
1. Remove the air cleaner housing (see chapter Power and exhaust systems).
2. Support the engine with a trolley jack - in order to distribute the load, lay a block of wood between the head of the jack and the oil pan. Turn out bolts of fastening of a support of a suspension bracket of the power unit to a head of cylinders.
3. Remove the lower tensioner cap from the back of the cover.
4. Remove the tensioner plunger - try to remember the installation position of the components. Remove the o-ring from the cap - when installing the o-ring must be replaced without fail.
5. Inspect the tensioner plunger for signs of wear and damage. Replace if necessary.
Installation
1. Lubricate the tensioner plunger with clean engine oil and install it in the cylinder head with the blind end to the chain.
2. Install a new sealing ring on the tensioner cap, then screw the cap into the cylinder head, tightening to the required torque.
When installing a new tensioner, unlock it by completely drowning the central rod of the cap until it clicks - now the tensioner rod should sink freely and smoothly return to its original position.
3. Install right power unit support (see Checking the condition and replacing the suspension bearings of the power unit).
4. Install the air cleaner (see chapter Power and exhaust systems).
Lower chain tensioner
Removing
1. Apply the parking brake, jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on jack stands. If equipped, remove the crankcase protection.
2. Remove the lower tensioner cap from the back of the cap.
3. Remove the tensioner plunger - try to remember the installation position of the components. Remove the o-ring from the cap - when installing the o-ring must be replaced without fail.
4. Inspect the tensioner plunger for signs of damage and excessive wear. Replace if necessary.
Installation
1. Lubricate the tensioner plunger with clean engine oil and insert it into the timing cover with the blind end towards the chain.
2. Install a new o-ring on the cap and screw the cap onto the cover, tightening it to the required torque.
When installing a new tensioner, loosen it, completely drowning the central rod of the cap until it clicks - now the tensioner rod should sink freely and smoothly return to its original position.
3. Replace the crankcase guard and lower the vehicle to the ground.
Upper and lower chain tensioner shoes
Shoes should be replaced if they show signs of damage or excessive wear - see Removing and installing timing cover.
