Removal

1. Set the parking brake, jack up the front of the car and place it on stands. Remove the right front wheel and (with appropriate equipment) crankcase protection.

2. Remove the accessory drive belt (see Chapter Routine maintenance), - first mark the direction of rotation of the belt on the tape.

3. Loosen the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt - have an assistant engage high gear and fully depress the foot brake pedal to prevent the crankshaft from turning. On automatic transmission models, loosen one of the torque converter mounting bolts and secure the drive plate to the transmission dome using a steel bar and a pair of suitable bolts fitted with washers. If the engine is removed from the vehicle, block the flywheel/drive plate (see Removal, checking condition and installing flywheel/drive disk).

4. Unscrew the fastener and remove the pulley from the crankshaft journal. After removing the pulley, check the condition of the seal - replace the latter if necessary.

Installation

1. Carefully install the pulley on the crankshaft journal, making sure that the keyway fits correctly on the key. Make sure that the pulley is completely seated - try not to damage the working edges of the seal.
