A simple switching relay is used for powerful electrical consumers. If the current is bypassed through the corresponding switches, then there are voltage losses. In addition, the contacts of the switches are subjected to a heavy load due to the high current. With a relay connection scheme, the switch is used only for a small switching current, while not the consumer is directly connected, but its relay.
Certain relays may perform additional functions. For example, a breaker relay turns on intermittent light signals, an interval relay in the windshield washer/wipe system controls intermittent operation and wiper operation «dry» after washing the windows. There are no such relays in our Vectra. All these functions in this case are performed by a multi-timer.
Switching devices and control units have more or less extensive electronic circuits for performing certain functions, sometimes a relay is also built in. Examples include an ignition/injection control unit or an airbag control unit.
Relay function
When the corresponding consumer is switched on, due to the input to terminal 86 «switching current», the switching circuit is closed in the relay to terminal 85.
As a result of this, the electromagnetic coil attracts a powerful contact against the pressure of the spring, and thus closes the electrical circuit for «operating current».
The operating current, in order to avoid a voltage drop, is supplied in a short way directly to terminal 30 of the relay and from there further - with the switch contacts closed - through terminal 87 to the current consumer.
There are numerous relays in the fuse box:
1 - fanfare / horn of a sound signal (K63);
2 - high beam headlights (K73);
3 - rear window cleaner (K120);
4 - heated exterior mirror (K121);
5 - fog lights (K5);
6 - fog lights (K89);
7 - turn signal lamp on the right (K123);
8 - turn signal lamp on the left (K122);
9 - heated rear window (K1);
10 - air conditioner supercharger (K7);
11- air conditioning (Kb);
12 - air conditioner supercharger, 1st stage (K64);
13 - front glass cleaners (K124).
Relay Troubleshooting
There must always be voltage at terminal 30, unless it is a relay whose consumer is dependent on another. Example: The fog light relay only receives current when the light is on.
To check, pull out the corresponding relay a little and tap the needle of the test lamp on terminal 30.
Disconnect the relay, connect terminal 86 to battery positive and terminal 85 to ground. It must be clearly audible how the electromagnetic coil attracts the relay contact, otherwise the relay is faulty.
Temporary roadside assistance with a faulty relay
Remove the relay from the socket.
Short terminals 30 and 87 in the relay socket with a paper clip or a piece of wire. As a result, the corresponding consumer will constantly receive current.
To turn off, remove the jumper, because. this switch is closed in this case.
Multitimer
Integrated into the fuse box is a detachable multi-timer, an electronic jack-of-all-trades that can simultaneously control various timing and switching functions. A small electronic component, among other things, turns off the heated rear window and exterior mirror after at least 15 minutes of operation, as well as the lights, fog lights and fog lights after the ignition is turned off.
