Have the courage to somehow change the wheel, even if it hasn't been in an accident. At the same time, check whether the jack is still functioning and whether you can unscrew the wheel bolts with a wheel wrench.
In the event of a tire accident, stop as quickly as possible. But brake at the same time very carefully, otherwise the car will start to throw, despite the ABS. When changing a wheel, behave in such a way that you do not interfere with other road users and do not endanger yourself. Immediately secure your car with an emergency alarm and an emergency triangle.
Engage handbrake and 1st gear or reverse.
Also, turn on the hazard warning lights and set up the emergency triangle.
Secure the wheels on the other side of the vehicle against rolling, for example by supporting them with rocks or pieces of wood.
If the rims are steel, insert your fingers into the holes in the cast wheel cap and remove the cap or use a removable clip (on-board tool).
For light metal rims, carefully pry out the protective caps with a screwdriver.
Use the key to open the wheel bolt lock, if equipped.
Loosen the wheel bolts only one turn.
Install the jack with an outward slope, in the place intended for it at the lower edge of the body (see chapter «Workplace»).
If the ground is soft, place a plank under the jack.
Raise the car
Completely unscrew the bolts.
Remove the wheel, put the spare.
Tighten the bolts evenly and crosswise. At the same time, rotate the wheel back and forth so that it is perfectly centered on the hub.
Lower the car, tighten the bolts (110 Nm).
Install the decorative cap and protective caps. When installing the cap, pay attention to the location of the tire valve hole
After driving a short distance, check the tightness of the bolts.
Tire repair
Repair of radial tires with a steel cord is problematic. If the defect is established after a significant period of time, the tire carcass could suffer from prolonged driving at too low air pressure. If moisture has entered through the puncture, rust can corrode the stabilizing steel cord. It is dangerous when damage cannot be detected from the outside. If the repaired tire is heavily loaded (high speed, full load), then it can fail suddenly. Inserting a camera is only an unsuitable last resort, since protruding steel wire in the damaged area may rub the camera.
Tip: If you are repairing a steel cord radial tire in a workshop, it should be done by a tire repair shop. If necessary, mark the tire as a spare tire no longer suitable for high speeds and place in the spare wheel well. If in doubt, buy a new tire.
To replace a factory fitted light metal wheel, you need the special wrench shown here (1) in order to be able to unscrew the cap (2).
