Selecting gear D with the control lever, you have switched the gearbox to economy driving mode. You can almost always drive in the D stage.
Gently depressing the accelerator pedal will shift to fuel efficient gears early. Manual step change is only necessary in exceptional cases. Select 3, 2 and 1 only when it is necessary to avoid upshifting or additional engine braking is required.
As soon as the traffic situation permits, select D again.
Automatic transmission
Automatic transmission control lever positions P, R and N:
R = parking. The front wheels are blocked. Translation only when the vehicle is stationary and the hand brake is applied.
R = reverse. Switch on only when the vehicle is stationary.
N = Neutral or idle.
The automatic transmission control lever can only be moved out of the P position with the ignition on and the foot brake pedal depressed.
The engine can only be started in position P or N. When starting in position N, depress the foot brake pedal or apply the hand brake.
Do not press the accelerator pedal while shifting gears.
Stage D
D = constant position for normal driving conditions in gears 1 to 4.
After starting the engine and engaging D, the transmission always operates in economy driving mode.
Step 3
3 = position for driving conditions in gears 1, 2 and 3.
Stage 2
2 = position for driving in 1st and 2nd gears, e.g. on a mountain serpentine; there is no shifting to 3rd and 4th gears.
Stage 1
1 = load stage for maximum braking force, e.g. on steep descents; no shifting above 1st gear.
Electronic Driving Modes
Sport driving mode, gearbox changes gears at higher engine speeds: press button S ( is on).
Economy mode, gearbox changes gears at lower engine speeds: press button S again.
Starting assistance: press the button.
Engines X18XE, X20XEV, X25XE1: automatic neutral switch automatically shifts the gearbox to position N to reduce fuel consumption, for example, during stops at traffic lights. Automatic switching to the neutral position is carried out if:
- the automatic transmission control lever is in position D, 3, 2 or 1 and
- the foot brake pedal is depressed and
- vehicle is stationary and
- no pressure on the accelerator pedal.
As soon as the brake is released or the accelerator pedal is pressed, the vehicle starts moving normally.
After starting a cold engine, the operating temperature control program quickly brings the temperature of the catalyst to the temperature required for optimal reduction of toxic substances in the exhaust gases by delaying gear changes (at higher engine speeds).
The adaptive programs are programs that automatically adapt gear changes to driving conditions, such as when towing a trailer, when heavily loaded and on hills.
Help when pulling away
In case of difficulties on slippery roads, to start off, press the button, turns on in P, R, N, D, 3 (power-on signaling device - ). The car will move in 3rd gear.
Start assist is turned off by pressing the button again.
In addition, it is possible to turn off by:
- manual selection of steps 2 or 1;
- turning off the ignition.
Kickdown - sharp pressing all the way down on the accelerator pedal
Pressing the accelerator pedal to the stop: at a speed below a certain value, the box shifts to a lower gear. Used for acceleration using full engine power.
Additional engine braking
To use the braking functions of the engine when descending, turn on 3, 2 or, if the situation requires it, 1 in a timely manner.
The braking action is especially effective in gear 1. If engaged at too high a speed 1, the gearbox will continue to operate in 2nd gear until the point of transition to 1st gear is reached by, for example, braking.
Stop
The enabled stage when stopped with the engine running can be saved.
When stopping on slopes, be sure to apply the hand brake or depress the foot brake pedal. To prevent overheating of the transmission, do not keep the vehicle in place in the engaged gear by increasing the engine speed.
When parking for long periods of time, such as in traffic or at a railway crossing, stop the engine.
Before leaving the vehicle, first apply the handbrake, then shift to P and remove the ignition key.
The ignition key can only be removed from the ignition lock when the transmission control lever is in position P.
"rocking"
In order to rock a car stuck in sand, mud, snow or a ditch for further movement, you can switch the control lever between D and R with a lightly depressed accelerator pedal. Keep the engine speed as low as possible and avoid sharp pressing the accelerator pedal.
The method described above should be used only in exceptional cases.
Precise maneuvering
For precise maneuvering, for example, when parking a car, entering a garage, etc., you can use the method "crawl" by releasing the foot brake pedal.
Never press the accelerator and foot brake pedals at the same time.
Malfunction
The indicator lights up when the ignition is on. If it does not go out after starting the engine or lights up while driving, then there is a malfunction in the automatic transmission.
If the vehicle is equipped with a Multi-info-display, a fault message is displayed on the display "Automatik Getriebe" ("Automatic transmission").
The gearbox no longer shifts automatically.
You can keep moving. Shift gears 1, 3 and 4 manually using the gear lever:
1 = 1st gear,
2 = 3rd gear,
3 = 4th gear,
D = 4th gear,
N = neutral (idling),
R = reverse,
R = parking.
Have the cause rectified by an authorized Opel workshop. The self-diagnosis algorithm integrated in the system allows you to quickly find the cause of the malfunction.
Power failure
Power failure, e.g. due to a dead battery. In the event of a power failure, it is impossible to withdraw the automatic transmission control lever from position P.
Unblocking:
1. Apply the hand brake.
2. Raise the cover on the raised part of the floor between the front seats and turn it 90°to the right.
3. Press the pawl forward with a screwdriver and remove the automatic transmission control lever from position P.
4. Replace the cover on the protruding part of the floor between the front seats and fix it.
Retransfer to position P again will lock the lever. The cause of the power failure must be repaired by an authorized Opel workshop.
