Models 14NV
1. All models with a 14 NV engine have their ignition timing adjusted to use 95 RON unleaded gasoline and no other adjustment is required.
2. If required, leaded gasoline can be used (98 RON) without adverse effects.
Models 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters with a single overhead camshaft
Note: Models with a catalytic converter must always be run on 95 RON unleaded gasoline, and although a fuel octane coding plug may be installed, it must not be tampered with.
3. Models other than 14 NV are equipped with this plug, which is located in the bracket at the left rear of the engine compartment (see illustration).
4. The plug can be reversed in the connector. One side has a label "A" or "98", which corresponds to the provision for the use of leaded gasoline 98 RON. There is a mark on the other side "IN" or "95", which corresponds to the provision for the use of unleaded gasoline 95 RON. All vehicles are factory set to use 95 RON unleaded petrol.
5. Before changing the plug to use a different type of gasoline, first empty the fuel tank.
6. Fill the fuel tank with the correct type of gasoline.
7. Make sure the ignition is off, then remove the bracket and disconnect the coding plug.
8. Rotate the plug 180°so that the corresponding octane mark is at the top (see point 4), then insert the plug and secure it with the bracket.
9. Please note that higher octane ratings will not cause damage, but lower octane ratings should not be used
Models 20XE, C20XE and X20XEV
10. These models have a coding plug for ignition timing, not fuel octane, (although the action method is like) and its position cannot be changed. It is designed to provide the Motronic unit with the correct information stored in memory.
11. On these models, the knock sensor circuit allows the Motronic unit to compensate for differences in the octane rating of the gasoline used, without the need for manual adjustment. But remember that all vehicles with a catalytic converter must be run on unleaded gasoline only.
