Loosen the distributor lock plate mounting bolt.
Connect the test lamp with one wire to the low voltage terminal of the breaker, and with the other wire to the ground.
Turn the engine crankshaft so that the mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the mark on the camshaft drive cover.
Turn on the ignition.
Turn the distributor housing counterclockwise until the indicator lamp lights up and tighten the distributor lock plate fastening screw.

Setting the ignition timing using a stroboscope on a running engine
Loosen the distributor lock plate mounting bolt.
Connect the strobe light according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Disconnect the vacuum hose from the ignition distributor.
Start the engine at idle speed and point the flashing strobe light at the crankshaft pulley.
Turn the ignition distributor housing so that the mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the mark on the camshaft drive cover.
Tighten the distributor lock plate mounting bolt and recheck the ignition timing. Connect the vacuum hose to the distributor.
