Note: Before you start, see Chapter 3. Procedures for removing and installing ignition system components and the electronic module are given in the appropriate Chapters of this Section. Procedures for removing and installing all components of the fuel injection system are given in Section 4B.
Coolant temperature sensor
Removing
1. On all models except the 20 XEJ, the sensor is located at the end of the thermostat housing, intake manifold side.
2. On 20 XEJ models, the sensor is located in the thermostat housing, on the exhaust manifold side.
3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
4. Partially drain the cooling system as described in Section 3.
5. Disconnect the sensor wiring.
6. Unscrew the sensor with a wrench, remove it from the thermostat housing.
Installation
7. Install in reverse order.
8. Finally, top up the fluid level in the cooling system as described in Section 3.
Knock sensor (double overhead cam models)
Removing
9. The sensor is located at the bottom of the cylinder block on the intake manifold side, below the idle speed control, and is only accessible from under the vehicle.
10. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
11. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on axle stands placed under the sidewalls of the body frame.
12. Remove the bottom motor skid plate as described in Section 11.
13. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the sensor.
14. Turn off a bolt of fastening, and take the gauge from the block of cylinders.
Installation
15. Install in reverse order. Please note that the matching surfaces of the sensor and cylinder block must be thoroughly cleaned before installing the sensor.
