Engines with one camshaft
Front oil seal
Remove the camshaft sprocket. After making a hole in the stuffing box, screw in the screw and pull out the stuffing box.
Remove dirt from the seal seat with a wooden or plastic scraper. Wrap a thin tape around the end of the camshaft to seal the edges of the new oil gasket when installing it.
Lubricate the lips of the new oil seal and install it in place. Remove the protective tape from the camshaft, then install the sprocket on it.
Rear oil seal - 1.4 and 1.6L engines
Remove the ignition distributor or coil. On engines of 1.4 liters, as well as 1.6 liters with single-point fuel injection, the rear camshaft oil seal is in the form of an O-ring located on the rear of the ignition distributor housing. Remove the old oil seal using a screwdriver, install a new one and install the ignition distributor.
On 1.6L engines with multiport fuel injection, a similarly shaped rear oil seal is located behind the coil mounting plate. Unscrew three bolts and remove the panel. Remove the old seal with a screwdriver. Put a new seal, panel and ignition coil in place.
Rear Oil Seal - 1.8L and 2.0L Engines
Remove the ignition distributor parts.
Pry something off the oil seal and remove it from the camshaft housing. Remove dirt from the seal seat with a wooden or plastic scraper.
Apply clean grease to the lips of the new seal and install it flush with the camshaft housing wall using a bushing or tube. Be careful not to damage the edges of the seal.
Reinstall the ignition distributor parts.
Engines with two camshafts
Front oil seal
Remove the camshaft sprocket.
After making a hole in the stuffing box, screw in the screw and pull out the stuffing box.
Remove dirt from the seal seat with a wooden or plastic scraper.
Make sure the sprocket lock pin is in the up position.
Apply clean grease to the edges of the new oil seal and install it. Rotate the camshaft sprocket bolt to slide the oil seal into place.
Rear oil seal
Twin cam engines do not have rear oil seals on the camshaft, although the seal is installed at the rear of the distributor housing (the ignition distributor is driven by the exhaust camshaft).
To replace the seal, the ignition distributor must be removed, (chapter 5), and then using a screwdriver the old o-ring. Install a new seal and then the ignition distributor in place.
