Sedan and hatchback models
In the luggage compartment, remove the plastic cover from the top of the shock absorber.
Clamp the shock absorber rod and unscrew the shock absorber upper mount nut. Remove the washer and rubber gasket.
For easier access to the parts, reverse the car onto the ramp and put wedges under the front wheels (or place wedges under the front wheels, then raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it to stands under the bridge). If the vehicle is jacked up, the appropriate trailing arm must be jacked up after the vehicle has been raised to prevent the trailing arm from lowering due to the coil spring.
Unscrew and remove the bolt securing the lower end of the shock absorber to the trailing arm.
Squeeze the shock absorber by hand and, if necessary, release the lower part from the trailing arm.
Remove the shock absorber from under the car, remove the spacers and bushing from the top of the shock absorber.
Inspect rubber gaskets for wear or damage; if necessary, replace them.
The shock absorber can be tested by clamping the bottom lug in a vise, then fully extending and squeezing the shock several times. Any sign of sudden movement or lack of resilience indicates the need to replace the assembly.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, however, it is necessary to tighten the lower shock absorber mounting bolt as required.
Station wagon and van models
On models with manual rear suspension level control, depressurize the system by releasing air through the valve located in the luggage compartment.
Carry out the operations with the order of operation as indicated in the third paragraph of this section.
If required, disconnect the manual level control air line from the shock absorber.
Clamp the shock absorber rod and unscrew the lower trailing arm connection nut. Remove the washer and top rubber seal.
Loosen and remove the bolt securing the upper shock absorber to the bottom of the car body.
Squeeze the shock absorber with your hand and. if necessary, pry the upper end with a lever to remove it from under the body.
Remove the shock absorber from under the car, remove the gaskets from the lower end of the shock absorber.
The procedure here is as indicated in the seventh and eighth paragraphs of this section, however, it is necessary to clamp the upper eye in a vise to check the shock absorber.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
Where required, check that the shock absorber with air tubing assembly is properly installed.
Tighten the shock absorber top bolt as required.
On models with manual rear suspension level control, pressurize the system to 0.8 bar and check for leaks.
