Starting the engine from an auxiliary power source (Opel Vectra C)

Using an auxiliary power source will help start the engine in an extreme situation, but then you should find out and eliminate the cause of the battery drain, the most typical are:

a) Making repeated unsuccessful attempts to start the engine, or leaving the lights on for a long time with the engine off;
b) Malfunction of the charging system (the alternator drive belt is loose or broken, the connecting wiring is damaged, or the alternator itself is faulty).
c) Malfunction of the battery itself (the electrolyte level has dropped or the battery's service life has expired).

Only the battery of another vehicle may be used as an auxiliary power source.

Attention! Only 12-volt batteries can be used to start the engine!

When performing engine starting from an external power source, attention should be paid to observing some special precautions:

a) Make sure that the cars do NOT touch each other under any circumstances;
b) Remove the covers from both batteries (when properly executed) and cover the ventilation openings with rags, - do not allow smoking or use open flames near batteries;
c) Before connecting the auxiliary battery, make sure the ignition on both vehicles is off;
d) Ensure that all electricity consumers (lighting and heating devices, windshield wipers, etc.) were also turned off;
e) Use only jumper cables of sufficient cross-section (not less than 16 mm² for petrol models, for diesel engines - 25 mm²) with insulated terminal clamps;

13. The order of connecting the connecting wires when starting the engine from an auxiliary power source (disconnecting the wires is done in reverse order), - please note that on a damaged vehicle the negative wire is connected not to the battery terminal, but to the ground of the power unit

f) Wear protective gloves and glasses, make sure that the electrolyte does not come into contact with skin, clothing or paintwork;
d) The terminals must be connected in a strictly defined order (see illustration 13);

Caution: Do not connect the cable to the negative pole of a discharged battery! The ground connection point should be as far away from the battery as possible!

h) Make sure that jumper wires do not come into contact with moving components (fan impeller, drive belts, etc.) in the engine compartments of both vehicles;
i) Make sure that the transmission is in neutral (manual transmission) or in the "P" position (AT);
j) Start the engine of the vehicle from which the battery is being jump-started and let it run for a few minutes, then set the engine speed to a constant level of approximately 2000 rpm.

Perform a standard engine starting procedure. Let the engine idle for approximately 3 minutes. Turn on the headlights, rear window defogger, and heater blower, then disconnect the wires in the reverse order of how they were connected.

Note: The purpose of switching on auxiliary power consumers is to prevent voltage surges when disconnecting the electrical wiring. After completing the procedure, switch off unnecessary power consumers.
