The ratio of the number of teeth of each pair of gears gives the corresponding gear stage. All transmissions in Vectra «fully synchronized», as well as reverse gear. The gears of the input and output shafts are located on «needles» (pin rollers). Those. there is no rigid connection between shafts and gears. The gears, as already mentioned, are always engaged.
When changing gear, a connection is created not between the gears, but between the gear and the shaft. To equalize the number of revolutions of the shaft and gear, thanks to the friction element, the part of one shaft slides relative to the part of the other shaft. The faster-moving shaft is braked by friction until a force-transmitting connection is created during synchronous rotation. To spare the speed synchronization, do not forcefully pull the shift lever.
Gear shift check
Start the engine in a stationary car.
Press the clutch pedal and alternate gears you feel the heaviness of the stroke or resistance, turn on all gears.
If you feel heavy movement or resistance when moving the gear lever, then you need to check the gear shift adjustment.
Shift Adjustment
To adjust the shifting workshop Ore! has a special tool KM 527-A. With this tool, the gear lever is fixed in the idle position during adjustment. Gear shifting can be temporarily adjusted with an assistant.
Squeeze the leatherette cover of the shift lever lightly, remove from the center console clips and slide up.
Place the shift lever in neutral position.
Under the vehicle near the front wall, loosen the shift bar clamp bolt - but do not completely unscrew it.
Push the shift lever to the left in neutral position. The holes on the left side of the lever and on the lever housing must be located one above the other.
Lock the shift lever in this position. To do this, insert a special tool or rod into the holes.
The photo shows the dowel pin (arrow) at the top of the gearbox. To install, press the pin in the fixed position of the gear lever, at the same time turn the loosened shift rod to the left. Tighten the shift bar clamp bolt.
Left: Press the shift lever to the left to the idle position so that the holes on the left of the lever and on the lever housing are one above the other. Now insert a suitable screwdriver or pin into the hole and then loosen the clamping collar in the engine compartment.
On right: The arrow shows the clamping collar of the switching rod. If the gearshift is sticking, loosen the jam nut and adjust the gearshift as described at the beginning of the chapter.
Press in the engine compartment the dowel pin at the top in the crankcase, while at the bottom of the car, your assistant turns the switch rod to the left (towards 3rd gear).
If the shift lever is fixed without play, tighten the clamp bolt to 15 Nm.
Remove the special tool or screwdriver.
After assembly, start the engine and check the gear shift.
The dowel pin disengages itself after the first gear change in direction «R».
If switching is difficult, repeat the installation.
