Contents: Removal ⬇ Examination ⬇ Installation ⬇

Removal

1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the wheel.

2. Release the handbrake completely.

3. Loosen the brake drum mounting screw and remove the drum. The drum may be difficult to remove from the hub due to corrosion of the hub or because it is held in place by brake shoes. In the first case, tap the drum perimeter with a plastic hammer or wooden mallet to remove the drum from the hub. In the second case, remove the plug from the inspection hole in the brake shield and move the handbrake lever to its original position, which will move the brake shoes away from the brake drum and the brake drum should be easy to remove.

Examination

1. Carefully clean the inside surface of the brake drum from brake dust and dirt.

2. Clean the outside of the brake drum and check for obvious signs of wear or damage, cracks around the wheel bolt holes. Replace the drum if necessary.

3. Check the inside of the brake drum. Some wear on the drum from the action of the shoes is normal.

Installation

1. Check that the handbrake lever is fully released.

2. Install the brake drum and secure it with the screw. If necessary, reduce the length of the brake shoe adjusting bar by turning the bar adjusting wheel.

3. Press the brake pedal several times to activate the brake shoe clearance adjusting mechanism.

4. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle.
