The system returns small amounts of exhaust gas to the combustion cycle to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx).
On C16 NZ, C16 NZ2 and C18 NZ engines, the amount of exhaust gas bled for reburning is controlled by manifold vacuum through an EGR valve mounted on the intake manifold. When the valve is open, a small amount of exhaust gas enters the intake duct and then into the ports in the cylinder head.
On X16 SZ engines, the EGR valve is controlled by a block mounted on the left side of the engine compartment behind the battery. This unit amplifies the signals received from the ECU of the fuel system and controls the EGR valve, providing precise control of the combustion of exhaust gases depending on the engine operating mode.
