Note: Before you start, see Chapter 2. Use a new manifold gasket when installing.
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Drain the cooling system as described in Section 3.
3. Proceed as described in Chapter 13, items 2-7 inclusive.
4. Disconnect the coolant hose at the back of the manifold (see illustration)
5. Where applicable, disconnect the breather hose from the camshaft cover to the rear of the manifold (see illustration).
6. Turn off the coupling, disconnect a vacuum hose of the amplifier of a brake from a collector.
7. On models 1.4 and 1.6 liters, disconnect the wiring from the temperature gauge sensor.
8. Loosen and remove the alternator top mounting nut and bolt.
9. On models 1.4 and 1.6 liters, disconnect from the pipe and remove the hose that connects the crankcase breather pipe to the rear of the camshaft housing.
10. Make a final check to ensure that all relevant hoses, pipes and wires have been disconnected.
11. Turn off fixing nuts, remove a collector from a head of the block of cylinders (see illustration). Note the position of the rear engine lift bracket that is attached to one of the manifold nuts, remove the manifold gasket.
12. Some manifold struts may loosen from the cylinder head when loosening the mounting nuts. In this case, the struts must be screwed back into the cylinder head as soon as the manifold is removed, use two lock nuts to do this.
13. If required, the carburetor can be removed from the manifold, guided if necessary Chapter 13.
Installation
14. Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following.
15. If the carburetor was removed from the manifold, reinstall it using a new gasket.
16. If the generator mounting bracket was unscrewed from the manifold, install it before installing the manifold, since once the manifold is installed, access to the mounting bolt is very limited.
17. Install the manifold using a new gasket. Be sure to attach the engine lift bracket in place. Tighten the nuts to the specified torque specifications.
18. Check that all relevant hoses, pipes and wires are properly connected.
19. Fill the cooling system as described in Section 3.
20. Check the free play of the throttle cable, adjust if necessary, as described in Chapter 11.
21. If the carburetor has been disturbed, check and, if necessary, adjust the idle speed and mixture as described in Chapter 14.
