Battery care
The following work should be done from time to time to ensure that the battery lasts longer and its capacity is maintained at maximum.
1. Always keep the battery and its surroundings clean. The surface of the battery must always be dry, otherwise surface leakage currents may occur between the individual cells, causing the battery to discharge itself.
2. In cold weather, do not leave the battery uncharged, otherwise it will freeze. Weakly charged batteries freeze before charged ones.
3. The battery does not require maintenance, i.e. addition of electrolyte and measurement of its density is not required. There is a pointer at the top of the battery. Changing the color of the indicator gives an idea of the degree of battery discharge. If the indicator shows green, the battery is charged and the vehicle can be driven. As the battery discharges, the color of the indicator darkens, and gradually turns black, indicating that it needs to be charged.
If the color of the pointer completely disappears or turns yellow, then this indicates a decrease in the electrolyte level as a result of its evaporation or prolonged use. This battery cannot be used. The battery must be replaced.
When installing another battery that requires service, the following is required to keep it in good condition:
1. Clean the outer surfaces of the battery and wipe it dry, as this protects it from the occurrence of leakage currents between the individual sections. Leakage currents lead to battery self-discharge (also recommended for maintenance-free batteries).
2. The electrolyte level must be between the marks on the outside of the battery case (illustrations). Top up the battery only with distilled water.
Do not leave the battery in a discharged state as it may freeze. A discharged battery freezes faster than a charged one (this also applies to maintenance-free batteries).
Removing and installing the battery
2 - washers; 3 - positive cable; 4 - mounting plate.
1. The battery is located in the engine compartment and is mounted on the console, as shown in the illustration.
Disconnect ground cable (1) from the battery. For this, a wrench is used.
2. Disconnect the positive cable from the battery.
3. Unscrew the nuts of the long bolts securing the bar and remove the bar.
4. Remove the battery from the engine compartment. Handle the battery with care.
The battery is installed in the reverse order of removal. Connect the positive cable first, then the negative cable.
When installing the battery, first clean the contacts and then lubricate them with special grease.
