2. Remove the hood (see Section 11).
3. Remove the battery (see Section 12).
4. Drain the liquid from the cooling system (Section 2).
5. Remove the cooling fan and heatsink as described in Section 2. Remove the upper hose, lower radiator hose and expansion tank hose. Also disconnect the hoses from the coolant pump housing and the hoses from the heater matrix connections on the bulkhead.
6. Drain the engine oil, then install the drain plug of the pan and tighten it with the tightening torque regulated specification.
7. Loosen the union nuts, disconnect the oil cooler pipes from the engine. Unscrew the pipes from the oil cooler lines and remove them. Plug oil cooler lines and engine passages to prevent dirt from entering.
8. Remove the alternator as described in Section 12. Unscrew the alternator mounting bracket and remove it from the engine.
9. Unscrew the power steering pump, move it away from the engine; liquid lines can be left connected.
10. Remove the cruise control unit.
11. On models with air conditioning, unscrew the compressor, move it away from the engine and unscrew the mounting bracket from the unit (see Section 11). Do not disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor.
12. Next, do the following:
- a) Remove the intake port and air filter housing cover assembly.
- b) Mark the location of the fuel pipes, disconnect them from the injectors.
- c) Remove the exhaust pipe and mounting brackets, then remove the catalytic converter heat shield (if available).
- d) Disconnect the vacuum hose and breather hose from the intake manifold.
- e) Disconnect the throttle and cold start cables from the levers on the fuel pump.
13. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the following components.
- a) Switches and sensors on the thermostat housing (Section 2).
- b) Unscrew the ground cables from the intake manifold and side of the cylinder block.
- c) Oil pressure sensor / oil level sensor / oil thermal switch (if available).
- d) Engine wiring connectors located in the center of the engine compartment bulkhead.
14. On manual transmission models, perform the following steps as described in Section 1A.
- a) On models with hydraulic clutch, remove the heat shield, disconnect the hydraulic pipe from the clutch slave cylinder. Release the pipe from the transmission bracket.
- b) On models with a cable clutch, disconnect the cable from the release lever (see Section 5).
- c) Disconnect the wiring from the reversing lamp switch and the speedometer drive.
- d) Remove the shift rod.
- e) Disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear of the transmission (see Section 7).
- j) Support the weight of the transmission with a jack, then unscrew and remove the rear mount cross member from the transmission.
15. On models with automatic transmission, perform the following steps as described in Section 7B.
- a) Disconnect the transmission breather hose and wiring connectors.
- b) Disconnect the oil cooler hoses and plug them to prevent dirt from entering. Disconnect the electrical wiring located behind the pipes.
- c) Set the selector lever to position "N", then unscrew the nut and disconnect the selector lever from the transmission shaft.
- d) Disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear of the transmission (see Section 7).
- e) Support the weight of the transmission with a jack, then unscrew and remove the rear mount cross member from the transmission.
16. On all models, unscrew the engine motion dampers on the left and right sides of the cylinder block, move them to the side.
17. Bring the winch, attach it to the lifting eyes on the cylinder head. Support the weight of the engine.
18. Unscrew the left and right hangers of the mounting bracket from the engine, then finally check that all components that would prevent the removal of the engine / transmission from the vehicle have been removed or disconnected. Check that the power steering pump type components are secured so that they cannot be damaged when removed.
19. Lift the front end of the engine up, then remove the engine from the engine compartment. When doing this, be very careful not to damage the surrounding components in the engine compartment, especially the air conditioning system.
20. Install the engine on suitable blocks of wood on the workbench.
21. Unscrew the mounting bolts, remove the protective cover of the flywheel / drive disk from the transmission (where used). On automatic transmission models, remove the washer and gasket behind the drive plate.
22. On models with automatic transmission, unscrew the bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate. To access the bolts, rotate the engine by the crankshaft shock absorber bolt.
23. Loosen and remove bolts, remove starter from transmission.
24. Loosen and remove the remaining bolts securing the gearbox housing to the engine. Note the correct positions of each bolt (and matching pendants).
25. Carefully disengage the transmission from the engine, being careful not to let the transmission hang from the input shaft.
26. Remove location pins from engine or transmission.
