Before the beginning
Make sure your vehicle is on level ground.
Check the oil level before starting the engine, or at least 5 minutes after turning off the engine.
The right oil
It is very important to use the correct oil for your car (Cm. "Lubricants, fluids and tire pressures").
Precautions
If you have to add oil often, you need to check for leaks. Place a piece of clean paper under the car and in the morning check for oil stains. If there are no leaks, the engine may be burning oil (see "Troubleshooting").
Always keep the level between the top and bottom marks on the dipstick (see photo 3). If the level is too low, serious engine damage can occur. If the engine is flooded with oil, the oil seal may fail.
1. The top of the dipstick is often brightly colored for easy identification (see "Checkpoints under the hood"). Remove the level dipstick.
2. Wipe off all oil from the dipstick with a clean rag or paper towel. Insert a clean dipstick into the pipe as far as possible, then remove it again.
3. Note the oil level at the end of the dipstick which should be between the top ("MAX") and lower ("MIN") labels. It takes about a liter of oil to raise the level from the lower to the upper mark.
4. Oil is added through the filler cap. Unscrew the cap, top up the level Add oil slowly, checking the level with the dipstick. Don't spill.
