2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the air filter on carbureted models, or disconnect and remove the air duct from the throttle body and airflow sensor on fuel injected models.
4. Remove the heatsink as described in Section 2.
5. Disconnect the accelerator cable, throttle cable, automatic transmission kickdown cable, and medium speed control cable, if equipped.
6. Unscrew the power steering pump and suspension assembly, move them to the side (photo). No need to disconnect hoses.
7. If equipped, remove the air conditioning compressor (Section 11) and move it to the side without disconnecting the refrigerant hoses.
8. Disconnect the heater hoses in the baffle (photo).
9. Disconnect and plug fuel supply and return hoses. Remove the mounting bracket from the intake manifold.
10. Disconnect the high voltage wire from the ignition coil.
11. Locate the coolant hoses on the right side of the engine, disconnect them (photo). Also disconnect the vacuum brake booster hose.
12. Loosen the engine ground straps (photo).
13. Disconnect the upper hose from the thermostat casing.
14. Note the location and distribution of the engine wiring harness. Disconnect and remove harness. To ensure fast and accurate installation, mark each wire with tape. On fuel injected models, the harness must be disconnected at the top of the engine (photo) and near the airflow sensor.
15. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and secure it to the axle stands.
16. Unscrew the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold, remove the gasket. Where available, unbolt the exhaust hanger at the rear of the transmission.
17. Unscrew and remove the transmission front cover.
18. On manual transmission models, disconnect the clutch cable from the disengagement lever and transmission.
19. On models with automatic transmission, unscrew the bolts securing the torque converter to the drive plate, see. Section 6.
20. Turn off the bottom bolts fixing a transmission to the engine.
21. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
22. Attach the winch to the engine and lift it up slightly. There are lifting eyes in front of and behind the engine.
23. Support the gearbox with a jack.
24. Unscrew the nuts from the top of both engine mount brackets, unscrew the right mount bracket from the block (photo).
25. Turn off the top bolts fixing a transmission to the engine.
26. Pull the engine forward so that it moves away from the transmission. On automatic transmission models, make sure that the torque converter makes good contact with the transmission oil pump, otherwise it may fall and fluid will be poured out.
27. After releasing the engine from the gearbox, lift the engine out of the engine compartment (photo).
28. If the engine must be removed, drain the oil and install a drain plug before lowering the engine onto the workbench.
