Replacing the valve stem seals (Opel Kadett D)

Worn valve stem seals can cause high oil consumption. When replacing valves or working on the cylinder head, it is essential to replace the valve stem seals. The following illustrations show an OHC engine. The work on an OHV engine is the same. On an OHV engine, only the intake valves are equipped with valve stem seals.

Removal

Remove the cylinder head.

Remove the valve springs.



Lift the oil deflector cap with a screwdriver.

Caution: Be careful not to damage the valve stem.

Installation

The mounting sleeve is included in the package with new oil deflector caps.

Note: Before installing the tube, cut off a section of the required length. Then put it on the end of the valve stem and lubricate it a little.

Install new valve stem seals through the stem onto the valve guide. Remove the mounting sleeve.

Please note: Since July 1983, the caps have been changed for 1.6/1.8L engines.

Place the cap carefully so as not to damage the lips.

Then press lightly on the cap so that its edge is locked in the groove of the valve guide sleeve.

Caution: Never push the cap further than the groove, as it will lose its sealing properties.
