Engine malfunctions (Opel Kadett D)

If the engine does not start, search for the fault purposefully, gradually narrowing the search area. For the engine to start, two conditions are necessary: the air-fuel mixture must enter the cylinders and a spark must appear on the spark plugs at the right moment, so first of all, you need to check the fuel supply. After that, you should establish whether there is an ignition spark. To do this, disconnect the high-voltage cable from the ignition distributor cap and hold it with insulated pliers at a distance of about 1 cm from the engine (ground). An assistant starts the engine without engaging the gear. If a spark jumps, unscrew the spark plugs and insert them into the ignition tip and hold them separately near the engine-ground. The assistant starts the engine. If a spark does not jump, look for the fault according to the table.

Caution: If an electronic ignition system is installed, do not touch the conductive parts when the ignition is on. Therefore, to check the ignition spark, hold the ignition cable or spark plug tip only with well-insulated pliers or attach the tip to the engine with adhesive tape.

Caution: When connecting the ignition cables, pay attention to the ignition sequence 1-3-4-2.

Remove the distributor cap. There is a mark on the side of the distributor housing. Install the distributor cap.

The ignition cable of the 1st cylinder is installed above the mark. Start the engine for a short time. The ignition cables of cylinders 3-4-2 follow the direction of rotation of the distributor runner.



Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage at terminal 15 of the ignition coil. To avoid high voltage shock, follow some of the rules below.

Connect the voltmeter to terminal 15 and ground. Connect the wire from terminal 1, the ignition coil, to ground.

Turn on the starter and measure the input voltage with a voltmeter.

The voltage must be at least 9 V.
