Oil change and maintenance intervals are set flexibly based on many parameters and operating conditions. To do this, various engine characteristics are constantly determined and the vehicle mileage remaining until the next service is calculated from them.
The remaining mileage of the car can be viewed on the speedometer with the ignition off and the mileage indicator off. Press and hold the odometer setting button for about 2 seconds, the message will be displayed «InsP» and the value of the remaining mileage of the car.
When the remaining mileage becomes less than 1500 km, after turning the ignition on and off, the display shows «InsP» with 1000 km remaining. If the remaining mileage is less than 500 km, the inscription «InsP» will appear for a few seconds: within one week or 500 km, scheduled maintenance work must be carried out. To avoid voiding the warranty, contact a service station.
Downtime periods during which the vehicle's battery terminals are disconnected are taken into account by the service interval display.
Additional information on maintenance and the inspection system can be found in the service booklet located in the front glove box.
Maintenance work, as well as repair work on the body and components, must only be carried out by qualified personnel.
Separate service for anti-corrosion protection
Should be done annually, as part of the annual inspection or separately, see service booklet. to exclude the possibility of losing the guarantee of anti-corrosion protection.
Note. To avoid personal injury from ignition cables and rotating parts, all checks in the engine compartment (e.g. checking the level of brake fluid or engine oil) should only be carried out with the ignition off.
Since the cooling fan is controlled by the thermostat, it may turn on even when the ignition is turned off, risk of injury.
Electronic ignition systems operate with very high discharge power.
It is not recommended to independently carry out any work on the repair, adjustment and maintenance of the car. This applies in particular to work on the engine and chassis, as well as on parts of the safety system. Out of ignorance, it is possible to violate legal regulations and, through incompetent actions, bring danger to yourself and others.
Checking and topping up liquids
The filler caps for engine oil, coolant, washer fluid, and the oil dipstick knob are painted yellow to make it easier to find.
Engine oil
Information about engine oils is given in the service booklet.
Engine oil level, engine oil consumption
For technical reasons, every engine consumes oil. It is possible to estimate oil consumption only after a sufficiently long mileage, while in the initial period (at the run-in stage) the flow rate may exceed the value specified in the documentation. Frequent driving at high engine speeds leads to increased oil consumption.
On vehicles with an engine oil level control system, the oil level is monitored automatically. Before a long trip, it is recommended to check the oil level.
Checking the engine oil level by adding engine oil
The illustrations show checking and topping up oil for various carburetor and diesel engines.
The control should be carried out only with the car parked horizontally and the engine turned off and warmed up. Before checking, wait at least 5 minutes for the oil in the manifold to drain into the oil bath.
To check the oil level, insert the wiped oil gauge up to the stop surface on the handle. Drink up if the oil level drops below the refill mark «MIN».
The oil level must not exceed the upper mark «MAX» oil gauge. The spilled oil must be drained or pumped out. If the oil level exceeds the mark «MAX», there is a risk of engine or catalytic converter damage.
Top up with the same brand of oil that was used during the previous oil change, following the instructions given in the service booklet.
Changing the oil and oil filter
Carry out an oil change according to the service interval indication.
It is recommended to use an original Opel oil filter.
Do not dispose of used oil filters and empty oil cans with household waste. It is recommended to have the oil change and oil filters changed by an Opel partner.
Diesel fuel filter
Every time you change the engine oil, check the fuel filter for possible water residue.
Under difficult operating conditions, such as high humidity (mostly on the coast), very high or low outside temperatures, as well as large temperature fluctuations day and night, check the filter at shorter intervals.
Coolant
During operation, the system is under high pressure. Therefore, the temperature may briefly rise above 100°C.
Glycol-based coolant provides excellent corrosion protection for cooling and heating systems, as well as freeze protection down to -28°C. It is in the cooling system all year round and does not need to be replaced.
There are antifreezes, the use of which can damage the engine. It is therefore recommended to use an antifreeze approved by Opel if necessary.
Attention! Antifreeze is harmful to health, so store it only in its original packaging and keep it out of the reach of children.
Frost protection and anti-corrosion protection
Before the start of the winter period, check the concentration of the coolant. The antifreeze content of the radiator must provide frost protection down to approximately -28°C. If the antifreeze concentration is too low, the protection against freezing and corrosion will be impaired. Add antifreeze if necessary.
In case of loss of coolant, top up with water, check the concentration of antifreeze and add antifreeze if necessary.
Coolant level
With a closed cooling system, there are practically no losses. Therefore, adding coolant is rarely necessary.
The coolant level in the expansion tank with a cold cooling system should be slightly above the mark «KALT/COLD». When the engine warms up to operating temperature, the level rises, and when it cools down, it drops again. If at the same time it falls below the mark, add coolant slightly above it.
Allow the engine to cool before opening the cap. Carefully open the cap so that the overpressure slowly releases, otherwise there is a risk of burns.
Add antifreeze. If antifreeze is not available, fill with clean potable water or distilled water as a substitute.
After filling with potable or distilled water, check the antifreeze concentration and add antifreeze if necessary. Eliminate the cause of loss of coolant.
When closing, screw the plug up to the stop.
Coolant temperature
For physical reasons, the coolant temperature is only displayed if the coolant level is sufficient.
During operation, the system is under high pressure. Therefore, the temperature can rise above 100°C.
If the temperature is in the red zone, check the coolant level immediately.
If the coolant level is too low: add coolant.
If the coolant level is correct: Eliminate the cause of the temperature rise. Contact a service station for help.
Brake fluid
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. Due to the strong heating during braking, e.g. on a long downhill slope, steam bubbles can form, which can significantly (depending on water content) degrade braking performance.
Therefore, the replacement intervals specified in the service booklet must be observed.
Windscreen wipers
Regularly check the efficiency of the windshield wipers and headlight washer. It is recommended to replace the wiper blades at least once a year.
If the windows are dirty, before operating the wipers or automatic wiper control with rain sensor, first use the glass washer to prevent wear on the wiper blades.
Do not operate the wipers or automatic wiper control with rain sensor when the windows are icy, as the blades or the control system may be damaged.
It is recommended to separate frozen windshield wipers with a defrost spray.
Dirty brushes can be cleaned with a soft cloth and detergent and antifreeze.
Windshield wipers with hardened, cracked or silicone-coated blades should be replaced. This may be necessary after damage caused by ice, salt, heat, or after improper use of care products.
Windshield wipers or automatic wiper control with rain sensor must be switched off in car washes.
To ensure trouble-free operation of the rain sensor, the sensor window must be free from dust, dirt and ice, for which the glass washer should be periodically turned on or ice removed from the sensor window. Vehicles with a rain sensor are distinguished by a sensor window on top of the windshield.
Replacing the wiper blade on the windshield
Raise the wiper arm. Lock the lever and separate the wiper blade.
Replacing the wiper blade on the rear window
Raise the wiper arm. Lock and remove the windshield wiper as shown in the figure.
Window washer, headlight washer
The glass washer and rear window washer reservoir is located in the engine compartment on the driver's side.
On vehicles with a headlight washer, the filler neck is located in the engine compartment behind the right headlight.
Fill only with clean water so that the nozzles do not clog. In order to increase cleaning efficiency, it is recommended to add a small amount of detergent and antifreeze.
When closing the tank, press firmly around the perimeter on the edges of the lid.
Battery
The battery does not require maintenance.
The installation of additional electrical and electronic equipment may increase the load on the battery, which will discharge faster. We recommend that you consult your Opel partner for technical options, such as installing a battery with a larger capacity.
