Do not touch the ECU terminals with your hands, as the engine management system is microprocessor-based and the electronic components of the ECU may be damaged by electrostatic discharge.
Getting Started with Car Repairs (especially if the operations involve dismantling elements of the engine control system), remove the terminal from the negative terminal of the battery.
Note: When the battery is disconnected from the vehicle's electrical system, the fault codes will be deleted from the ECU memory.
In many cases, to check the engine management system components, it is necessary to have power supply voltage in the electrical circuit of the system. In this case, disconnecting the wire blocks from the sensors and actuators of the engine management system is allowed only after the ignition is turned off.
You can disconnect the wiring harness connector from the ECU only after removing the terminal from the negative terminal of the battery.
If it is necessary to connect the battery to the vehicle's electrical system during repairs, first make sure that the ignition is off and the disconnected wires (terminals of the pads, ends of the wires) do not short to ground. First connect the terminal to the positive terminal of the battery, then to the negative. Turn on the ignition only for the duration of the measurements.
The engine management system uses electronic components with a supply voltage of 5 V. They are supplied with voltage from the vehicle's electrical network (where the voltage is more than 12 V) will result in failure of the engine management system.
To check the engine management system, use a multimeter with an internal resistance of at least 10 megohms in voltmeter mode. If you need to check the power supply circuits under 12 V, you can use a test lamp, but the lamp power must be less than 4 W (a 14V 1.4 W instrument cluster control lamp with a power of 1.4 W will do).
Before starting the engine, make sure the terminals are securely connected to the battery posts.
To avoid damage to the electronic components of the ECU, do not disconnect the wire terminals from the battery terminals while the engine is running.
Repairs to the engine management system due to a leak in the fuel line must be carried out in a well-ventilated area, outdoors or under a canopy. Even if the vehicle has not been used for a long time, before starting work on the fuel supply elements, it is necessary to relieve the pressure in the fuel line (see "Fuel Line - Pressure Relief"). Please note that after the pressure has been released, a small amount of fuel remains in the fuel line.
Gasoline is a highly flammable liquid and its vapors are explosive. Therefore, when performing repair work related to fuel supply elements, it is necessary to strictly observe fire safety regulations:
- Do not perform work near open flames or in areas where sparks are flying.
- Equip the work area with a fire extinguisher and/or other fire extinguishing equipment.
- De-energize electrical equipment that may cause sparks during operation.
- Do not smoke in the work area and prohibit others from smoking.
- When performing work, try to avoid fuel leaks. Immediately cover spilled fuel with sand and sawdust, remove the resulting mixture and ventilate the room.
- If there are gasoline vapors in the room, do not connect the terminals to the battery terminals or turn on or off other electrical equipment to avoid sparking at the switch contacts.
- Do not store rags soaked in gasoline or other flammable liquids.
During work, do not forget about safety precautions (see "Safety precautions when servicing and repairing a car").
After completing the work, make sure that all fuel line connections are tight.
