Do not touch the computer terminals with your hands, as the microprocessor engine control system and the electronic components of the computer can be damaged by electrostatic discharge.
Getting Started with Car Repair (especially if the operations are related to the dismantling of elements of the engine control system), disconnect the terminal from the negative battery terminal.
Comment. When the battery is disconnected from the vehicle's on-board network, fault codes will be deleted from the computer's memory.
In many cases, to check the elements of the engine control system, it is necessary to have a supply voltage in the electrical circuit of the system. At the same time, it is allowed to disconnect the wire blocks from the sensors and actuating elements of the engine control system only after the ignition is turned off.
Disconnect the wiring harness block from the computer only after removing the terminal from the negative battery terminal.
If it is necessary to connect the battery to the car's electrical network during repairs, first make sure that the ignition is turned off and the wires are disconnected (terminal blocks, wire ends) do not close on «mass». Connect the battery positive terminal first and then the negative terminal. Switch on the ignition only for the duration of the measurements.
The engine management system uses electronic components, the supply voltage of which is 5 V. Supplying voltage to them from the vehicle's electrical network (where the voltage is more than 12 V) will damage the engine control system.
To check the engine management system, use a multimeter whose internal resistance in voltmeter mode is at least 10 MΩ. If you want to check power circuits that are energized with 12 V, you can use a test lamp, but the lamp power must be less than 4 W (14V 1.4 W instrument panel indicator lamp with a power of 1.4 W is suitable).
Before starting the engine, make sure that the terminals are securely fastened to the battery terminals.
To avoid failure of the electronic components of the ECU, do not disconnect the wire terminals from the battery terminals while the engine is running.
Repair of the engine control system, associated with a violation of the tightness of the fuel line, must be carried out in a well-ventilated area, in the open air or under a canopy. Even if the vehicle has not been driven for a long time, the pressure in the fuel line must be relieved before working on the fuel supply elements (see «Fuel Line - Pressure Relief»). Please note that after the pressure is released, a small amount of fuel remains in the fuel line.
Gasoline is a flammable liquid and its vapors are explosive. Therefore, when performing repair work related to the fuel supply elements, it is necessary to strictly observe the fire safety rules:
- Do not carry out work near sources of open flame and in the area of sparks.
- Equip the place of work with a fire extinguisher and / or other fire extinguishing equipment.
- Disconnect electrical equipment that can cause sparks during operation.
- Do not smoke in the work area and do not allow outsiders to smoke.
- When performing work, try not to allow fuel leakage. Spilled fuel should immediately be covered with sand and sawdust, remove the resulting mixture and ventilate the room.
- In the presence of gasoline vapors in the room, do not connect the terminals to the battery terminals and do not turn on or turn off other electrical equipment in order to avoid a spark discharge on the switch contacts.
- Do not store rags soaked in gasoline or other flammable liquids.
Do not forget about safety in the process of work (see «Safety measures for car maintenance and repair»).
Upon completion of work, check that all fuel line connections are tight.
