Description
1. The crankcase ventilation system is available on all models, but the systems may differ depending on the model.
2. Oil vapors and gases escaping from the combustion chamber (combustion products that have passed through the piston rings), are sucked out of the crankcase through a hose into the region of the cylinder head above the camshaft. From there, the gases enter the intake manifold / throttle body (depending on the model) and/or heater block on carburetor (if available), where they are re-burned with the fuel-air mixture, resulting in a reduction in the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
Service
3. Some models have a filter inside the camshaft cover, which, if clogged, must be cleaned with kerosene (see illustration).
4. On high mileage vehicles, especially when used regularly for short trips, a gelatinous mass will collect inside the crankcase ventilation hoses. If there is excessive carbon deposits, the corresponding hose must be removed and cleaned.
5. Periodically check that the system hoses are secure and replace them as needed. Please note that damaged or loose hoses can cause various engine problems that are difficult to trace.
6. The crankcase breather/dipstick tube can be unscrewed from the cylinder block by first disconnecting the hoses. Use a new gasket when installing.
