Maintenance work
The exhaust system is rigidly connected to the exhaust manifold and - in models with 16V engines - additionally by a bracket with the engine. Under the bottom of the car, it is suspended freely in rubber brackets.
- Check rubber parts for brittleness, cracks or other damage and replace if necessary.
- Check the tightness of the screw connections of the exhaust pipe, exhaust manifold and fasteners, but do not apply great force.
- Close the end muffler with a rag while the engine is running.
- After a short time, the engine should stop.
- If you hear hissing sounds and the engine continues to run, then in those places where hissing is heard, the exhaust system is leaking.
- A duller-than-usual exhaust sound and pops when shifting gears are indicative of a rusted exhaust system.
- The muffler is exposed to the greatest danger of corrosion in the seams. If it should serve for some more time, then this area must be checked for strength by tapping with a screwdriver.
